Who is George Washington Carver?
George Washington Carver (b. 1864 - d. 1943) was an American scientist and educator. In the early 1900s, monocultures of cotton crops were grown in the southern United States and it was depleting the soil. Carver researched an promoted alternative crops such as peanuts and sweet potatoes to poor farmers especially, so they could grow them for food an as cash crops. What I love about Carver is that he provided these farmers with invaluable practical information about these newer crops. He wrote books on ways to care for the crops and how to prepare the food for consumption.
George Washington Carver did alot of amazing things, but I'm going to tell you about the not so common knowledge about his practice. Carver came up with hundreds of products that could be derived from the peanut and sweet potato. For example, he created cosmetics, dyes, plastics, nitroglycerin, gasoline, paints, etc. from the peanut. That is amazing in itself. However, in the little book called "The Man Who Talks With the Flowers" by Glenn Clark, I found out that he derived the ideas for these products by divine inspiration. Carver would be up at 4:00am and go into the garden to pray and be with nature. He'd connect with the plants and meditate on them (these are my words, I think he was Christian and so would refer to praying and God). Carver would then receive an answer from God, the plant, and Nature and then would go into his laboratory and follow the instructions and inspiration to create these products.
George Washington Carver recognized the God in every living being and made real, practical products and practices for the everyday person. He sounds like he was a lovely man, and I highly recommend you read more about him.
