What is Findhorn (the Findhorn Foundation)?
Findhorn is a small village in Northern Scotland (about 45 min drive East of Inverness, where Loch Ness is located). In the 1960's, a family (Eileen and Peter Caddy, and their children) and their friend (Canadian Dorothy MacLean) moved to a remote caravan park near the tiny fishing village of Findhorn. Findhorn is located right along the ocean, and this caravan park situated right in the sand dunes amongst the gorse and beside the Royal Air Force (RAF) army base.
Eileen, Peter, Dorothy and family all lived in this tiny caravan (or trailer). They left a job at a hotel they ran and so tried to make a living in this caravan park. With little money, it was a necessity to grow their own food, even if it was in the sandy Findhorn dunes. Being intuitive in their own ways, they started to garden by connecting with Nature. Eileen would receive divine messages from God (her description), Dorothy would receive divine messages from the deva of the plants, garden, landscape, etc., and Peter would carry out a lot of the practical tasks in the garden. Remember I said they lived in sand dunes? Well, this intuitive method worked, because they were growing gigantic vegetables and produce, and having incredible things happen in that garden! For example, they had the message to plant lots and lots of lettuce...lettuce everywhere! They did this, and wouldn't you know, there was a mass lettuce crop failure in the area, and they sold all their lettuce at the markets! Another story is that the garden would request a bale of straw. They had no money for straw. But wouldn't you know, a short time after, a farmer's load must have been unstable and a bale happened to be in the ditch one day! So is the magic of this place!
The story of these gigantic vegetables spread. People started to come to Findhorn to witness and be a part of this. Gone are the days of large vegetables today (I think that was a Universal attention-grabber). Today, they have created the Findhorn Foundation. They now own the land, and the hotel they had once worked at (Cluny Hill College it is called now). The Findhorn Foundation is a spiritual eco-community. You can visit and take courses. The most popular course is "Experience Week", where you spend time working in one of the departments (kitchen cooking vegetarian meals, maintenance, homecare, or the garden), and you experience what this community is all about. Thousands of people visit Findhorn every year. Check out the Living Machine and slideshow for more Findhorn.
The Findhorn Community isn't just based on gardening - the beauty is in their loving approach to living in community in harmony with each other and Nature. I visited there a few times, and what was inspiring to me is that you have people from all over the world, of different faiths and backgrounds who read a book about the community and some inner yearning prompted them to visit. It's hard to describe the community because people come there for different reasons - to learn about ecobuilding and sustainable communities, for a journey to learn about themselves, or about connecting with people and interacting in an innovative and wonderful way.
Findhorn is a place that will change your life. I've included all the videos I could find below, and I highly recommend you read the book "The Findhorn Garden" - I'm sure you will delight in it as I did.
