What is Perelandra?

Perelandra, Center for Nature Research is both the home and research center in Virginia, USA, created by Machaelle Small-Wright. Machaelle has written numerous books, starting from the first book in her life story "Behaving as if the God in All Things Mattered". She has also coined the term "co-creative gardening" and "co-creative science", which is essentially human and Nature intelligences working together in co-creation or partnership.

Machaelle comes across to me as very straightforward and grounded. Many of her books are almost how-to reference guides to working with Nature and with your physical health. In particular, her Perelandra Garden Workbooks I and II give the gardener steps to use their intuition and work co-creatively with the garden to create and maintain the garden.

Her main approach is a humble one - she looks to Nature as her teacher. She seeks to understand and work with Nature. She also listens to this Nature intelligence as to what to do in the garden - what to plant, how to plant, when to plant, the design of the garden, what to do to the soil, etc. All of this information can be obtained from the garden.

These books have absolutely changed my life. What I love about Machaelle's approach is that intuitive work is done in a very practical and interactive way. For example, in one of her videos she tells a cute anecdote about a plant wilting. Instead of standing in a circle around it and giving it love, the best thing to do may be just to give it a drink of water! I resonate with this. In the field of spirituality and intuition, very often you find teaching about intuition involves a lot of meditating, or vague descriptions about what intuition is.

What's inspiring about the Perelandra approach is that being intuitive and interacting with Nature is a way of being. I feel with Machaelle's approach, it isn't always the necessary to disconnect from this world, to shed yourself in meditation to get answers. Setting the intention to work in co-operation with Nature is a huge step. Surrendering to learn and interact with Nature happens in daily tasks such as weeded or planting. Her method involves tuning into your own body's electrical system. She teaches kinesiology or muscles testing to get an affirmative or negative (or yes or no) answer. You are telling yourself, in a sense, by tapping into your own inner wisdom, what these garden beings need and want.

If you are serious about working with Nature in this way, and delving into the deepest, most fulfilling journey, her Garden Workbooks and videos are what you need.
