Vegetarianism

I am not necessarily recommending that everyone become vegetarian. However, I can tell you my own personal experience.

Vegetarian eating has been more popular in India, China, and other Asian countries. These cultures have people who live longer and healthier lives. There are many more vegetables than there are meat choices - eating food definitely becomes exciting and varied. Many restaurants now in Western countries seem to have some kind of vegetarian choice. A salad doesn't always do it for me (geesh, and many restaurants just offer a bland iceberg lettuce salad), so I often ask the server for a recommendation and many times the chef cooks something special! You'll also find great vegetarian choices at Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and organic restuarants.

There are different types of vegetarians. Ovo-Lacto Vegetarians still eat eggs and milk products. Vegans do not eat animal products of any sort - e.g. no eggs, milk, or even honey. Vegan diets are pretty hard core and I haven't made this jump yet. I would recommend lots of research into a vegan balanced diet if this is the route you decide to go. And no, you are not a vegetarian if you eat fish or chicken.

I've been vegetarian for about 10 years now. It takes a little to get used to, but I feel healthier. The food digests quickly and doesn't "sit" in your stomach or hang around like a steak does. One interesting note, I had a male friend that said he noticed he felt less aggressive. And finally, I notice that animal products makes for much smellier poop and farts. Is that hormones and antibiotics? I don't know, but milk, butter, cheese, etc. in moderation.

The animal rights is a whole issue still. I won't talk too much about it. However, ask yourself this: if you had to, would you be able to do the deed of looking an animal in the eye and killing your own food? Many cringe, but conscious living mean taking responsibility for all parts of your life. If you do choose meat, perhaps you choose organic, or free range, or from local farmers that have a respect for the animals.
