Soil
Soil is the foundation in which life stands. When growing plants, the life force of the soil needs to be in balance. The life force is the microorganisms (fungi, bacteria) and macroorganisms (worms, grubs) that break down organic matter to provide nutrients and physical living space for plant roots to take hold. Chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides kill this life force of microorganisms - this is the reason to limit or eliminate their use as well as for health reasons for living beings.
Soil is our direct link to the Earth mother. Seeds are planted and from the soil burst food and plant life. The waste from living beings is designed to breakdown to make organic humus, a main component of soil. Many cultures talk about how we are born from the earth (a woman's womb is like the earth) and in death we go back to the earth in our body's decomposition.
Take care in how the soil is treated, as it allows life to burst forth into being and it transforms life into death. You'll find below many ideas about working with soil on a physical level in the garden or landscape, as well as energetic ways to connect with this element of Earth.
